How to Turn Your House Into a Home

One of the hardest parts of moving is turning your new house or apartment into a home that you feel excited to return to. Sometimes after a move, your house can seem empty, or unlived in.

But don’t worry! There are easy remedies that make your house feel like a home.

Add Rugs for Warmth

Adding rugs is a fast way to add color, texture, and warmth to any room. Plus, a well-sized rug can help even the smallest room feel larger and more comfortable.

Whether it’s a low pile rug under the dining room table or a lush shag carpet in the living room, rugs will quickly make space feel homier and inviting.

Layer Fabrics and Texture

Fabrics used for window treatments can be layered, with sheer panels underneath dramatic, light-blocking curtains. Curtain rods and finals also make a notable difference to the feel of the room. Layering other fabrics and textures can also help the room feel more inviting.

You can add elements such as different styles of pillows (corduroy, faux fur, or linen), soft throw blankets (minky or knitted), or upholstered seating or ottomans.

Don’t Ignore the Walls

Even if you are renting, there are plenty of temporary ways to add color and artwork to your walls. Temporary hooks don’t damage the paint for lighter items, and for larger artwork, a stud finder helps you put the least amount of holes in the walls while still providing support.

There are even temporary wallpaper options that are a perfect way to add some drama to any small space!

Unpack!

This one might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised to see just how big of an impact a single cardboard box can make. By leaving a box or two out or filled, you’re still signaling to yourself that you’re in the “moving” phase instead of the living phase.

Of course, in the process of packing, we tend to box up items that we don’t necessarily need or even want just to save the hassle of getting rid of the stuff. But instead of packing it up to deal with later, let us handle it! We take pride in offering additional services, like item donation or furniture removal, specifically to help make your moving day less stressful.

Lighting Matters

Many times people don’t think about how lighting affects the entire room. You can layer lighting just like you can layer rugs, textures, and fabrics.

Lighting options in 2020 are endless, with lamps, hanging fixtures, smart home options, and even under cabinet selections.

Lighting can either highlight certain areas of the room, showcase the centerpiece of the area, or just make it seem appealing. Different light temperatures can also change your space, with warm lighting appearing cozier, and cool-toned lighting offering a more modern, sleek look.

Make it Personal

The fastest way to make your house feel like a home is to add personalized photos, mementos, and sentimental items and artwork both on shelves and on the walls.

The more you add that is personal and meaningful to you, the more it will feel like your own personal oasis.

The Nose Knows

Don’t forget to entice all the senses; your new home may smell less than desirable. Besides a good deep cleaning, you can add oil diffusers, candles, incense, and other smell-good items that are pleasing to come home to.

Scents can be an important way to make your home feel like your space. Some people prefer bright citrus scents so that they can feel invigorated after a long day, while others love to enter the house to sweet vanilla notes. Eucalyptus and mint are great scents that give off a more masculine vibe. Whatever your tastes, coming back to a clean-smelling, decorated space makes you feel like you’ve entered a home, rather than a house.

Get Rid of the Clutter

It can be easy to move and fall into the trap of having your space become cluttered and disorganized. If you aren’t sure where everything should go, it may be better to move some of your items into full-service storage immediately after the move so that you can unpack as you move in.

This allows you to set up your furniture and your immediate needs, while you settle in and unpack at your own pace, without making your home cluttered.
