Moving is expensive! Especially long distance moves, where you need to get all of your possessions a thousand miles away or more.

The good news is that it’s possible to reduce the cost of your move, and it’s easy to do! Whether you use one of our tips or all of them, you are sure to bring down the cost of your move.

Lighten the Load

Simply put, the more you have to move, the more expensive it will be. Before packing, go through everything you own. There are many things you can do to minimize your move:

  • Have a yard or garage sale – collect everything together that you would like to sell, and organize a sale! If you don’t want to deal with a lot of people coming to your address, you can also have an online garage sale, usually hosted on social media.
  • Give things away to charity – whatever is leftover from your sale, or things that you don’t want to bother with photographing and listing; you can give to a local charity. Some charities will pick up donations, and reputable moving companies offer additional drop off services for furniture or unwanted food!
  • Make sure everything will fit at your new home – go over your new floor plan and make sure your giant sectional or king-sized bed will fit before you go through all the trouble of moving it.

Be Flexible

It’s not always a possibility, but if you have the option to be more flexible with the date of your move, moving during the offseason can save you quite a bit of money. The offseason for moving is between September and May.

If moving during the busy season is unavoidable, ask about discounts if you move during the middle of the week, rather than the weekend. Many moving companies will lower their prices for days that are less popular, usually Monday through Thursday.

Hire an Affordable Moving Company

Hiring professionals may seem counterintuitive to saving money, but if you hire them only for the parts of the moving process that you cannot do efficiently, they will get done faster, and you won’t risk breaking anything valuable. If you are making a long-distance move, hiring movers is the way to go.

Make sure you hire a trustworthy, affordable moving company to ensure that all of your belongings get to your new home safely.
