How to Pack Your Household in a Day

Packing your complete house for the move is not an easy task at any circumstances. Especially when you're in a time pinch and you have just one day to do it. When this happens, it's only natural to feel overwhelmed and stressed out. However, if you take this job with serious dedication and do some prep work, it is possible to pack your household in a day. You'll have to plan ahead, but it is manageable. These are the best tips to help you with packing your home as fast as possible.

Make a list of things that you need to pack

A checklist is always a good place to start. Before you start getting your belongings out of your cabinets and drawers, simply walk through the house and write down all the big items that you plan to pack or leave behind.

You need to say goodbye to things you don't need anymore. For instance, if you don't want to haul that big leather couch to your new home, add it to the donate list. Many charities offer pickups, so be sure to check who can come and pick it up during the day. On the other hand, everything that you want to bring with you - add to the list of things to pack.

Start early and ask for help

As we’ve already emphasized, what you're trying to do is a massive job, so you need to start as soon as you can. Use the hours before the dawn if you can. Your brain is fresh at these times, so you'll have enough energy to tackle all the difficult tasks before you. Every minute counts when you're trying to pack your household in a day. Because of this, make breakfast the day before. That will save you some time too.

It is almost a must to call your friends and family to help you with this too. It's easy to get overwhelmed and an extra pair of hands always comes in handy. Of course, they don't have to be there from the early start. Just get them to join you during the day, and you'll thank yourself later for all the stress that you reduced.

Pack fragile items and artwork ahead of time

Try to find the time to pack your prized valuables before the moving day. Here we mean all the artworks, knick-knacks, movie posters, or anything else that adorns your walls.

The thing is that fragile items such as little sculptures, souvenirs, vases, etc. need a little bit more care and time to pack properly. So try to do this as soon as possible to avoid damaging them along the way. You really don't need them displayed during the last few days before your relocation, do you?

Room by room packing

If you want to pack your household in a day, the key is to pack room by room. If you go down this road, you'll be able to focus on one area at the time so you won't worry about the whole house - and you got yourself an organized move.

When it comes to packing individual rooms, you should pack a drawer or a shelf at a time. Try to group similar items and pack them together. Organize boxes according to the room to which they're going in your new home.

The kitchen should be first

Kitchen is pretty much the hardest room to pack because of all the appliances, dishes and glassware located in it. Packing it is very time-consuming and can be exhausting as well. So, naturally, you should start with it.

If you can, it's best to pre-pack the kitchen. Leave out just the necessities. Coffee maker, a few plates and a few glasses. This will give you enough time to get all the other things done. On the other hand, if pre-packing the kitchen is not an option, be sure to start with it early on once your day of packing arrives.

Declutter along the way

Set the things that you want to donate or throw away aside as you pack. Feel free to consult your list along the way and try to be as merciless as you can. If something doesn't serve you well anymore, it shouldn't be in your possession.

There is simply no point in packing, transporting and unpacking things that you don't need. Be sure to plan your moving budget accordingly, as bringing more stuff will bring a higher price also.

Get all the supplies that you need and use trash bags

Don't make the classic moving mistake of not gathering packing supplies. It's extremely important to get everything that you'll need beforehand and keep it nearby. Here we mean things like the protective wrap, packing tape, boxes, and of course markers. They should be ready to use every time you load or seal a box.

Trash bags can be used for many things. For instance, you can use them for packing all the soft and pliable items. Put all of your pillows, towels, blankets, and clothes into these, as they can hold much more than a box and they can squish down if space is an issue. Don't take your clothes off the hangers. Simply put them in a trash bag in a way that hanger hooks are sticking out of the top of the bag and you're ready to go.

Use your bags and suitcases

For sure, you have a collection of bags, beach totes, and reusable grocery bags. Use them to transport clothes or anything else that could fit. All the things that are located under your sink, beauty products, and books can be transported in a suitcase, so why not?

Label all the boxes

According to many moving experts, labeling your boxes is the key to stressless unpacking. It's easy to forget about this when you pack your household in a day, but try not to. Write what room the box will go to and what's inside of it on the side. If there's anything fragile in it, be sure to write in capital letters ''FRAGILE'' on at least two sides of the box.
